Rogers Wireless is proposing a 60 Metre (197 ft) tower similar in construction to the tower shown in this photo. It will be located on a 256 square metre (approx 52' x 52') area on the west side of the centrally located Lower Side road about 1.1 km north of Howe Island Drive. The proposed tower will provide wireless and data services. Rogers Wireless was recently asked if they would be co-locating space for other cell carriers and if they would be be providing Wireless Internet access or Cable Internet Access as an option for homeowners. Rogers Cell Tower Proposal on Howe Island

We look forward to providing high quality wireless service in the near future on Howe Island. The tower will provide service on our GSM and HSPA networks, which for the end user will mean improved voice and data coverage to a wireless device such as a cell phone, Blackberry or other personal data device. We do not have any immediate plans to offer wireless internet service on Howe Island. Rogers is not the licenced cable provider in the area so there will be no cable infrastructure as part of this project. Rogers does have strategic relationships with other wireless carriers in which we share tower space and we would consider allowing those third parties to co-locate if such a request was received.

This Cell tower will benefit Rogers cellphone and Blackberry users from having their devices roam as is currently the case on Howe Island and will potentially benefit other cellphone users if their providers decide to co-locate on the same tower.

Re: Rogers Cell Tower Proposal on Howe Island
This tower (at least initially) will only benefit Rogers Wireless customers. I have not heard of Rogers receiving requests from Bell Mobility or Virgin to co-locate on the same tower so those customers will continue to have their cellphones roam.
Rogers does not have immediate plans to provide wireless internet access for homes here on the island so some homes will still be unable to get high speed access. |
