Many islanders have expressed their disappointment in the fact that glass isn't been collected at our recycling depot. The attached letter from Carol Dwyer outlines the Township's decision to cease their collection of glass.

Having spent time at the site, having assisted islanders toss their items into bins, having chatted with Alex Kane (he's doing a fabulous job), I know first hand that materials aren't being separated. Sheets of drywall were tossed into the metal bin along with tires, toilets and assorted nonmetallic items. Styrofoam is left by or tossed into a paper or plastics bin. Now, glass of any colour is being thrown into the plastics bin. All sorts of stuff that isn't wanted in one's back yard are left.

Some islanders think HIRA should be doing something about the recycling of glass. While I'd like to hear from members on a solution, how do we educate the general public to read and understand the 'no dumping' sign and to know the difference between 'clear and colored'? There are two signs at the depot, both strategically placed...one states, 'Metal Only, No Dumping'...the other, 'Howe Island Recycling Depot, No Dumping' along with the days and hours of operation and the Township's telephone number. Also, in the spring, the Township placed a flyer in our mail boxes outlining rules of recycling...'glass bottles and jars-Clear and Colored-TO BE PLACED IN SEPARATE CONTAINER'.

I shall send a copy of this message to Pat, Matt and Carol for their comments; however, Howe Island isn't the only jurisdiction that faces the high cost of transporting recycled materials. Many cities and towns have given up sending such materials great distances. Our Township's decision echoes others. Can we differentiate our small island population from other jurisdictions and do the right thing? Please let HIRA know your thoughts...
